The Sega Saturn sucked
Posted on January 30th, 2008 by Don Reisinger
Sorry, but my most recent column on CNET didn’t go over too well with the commenters. Oh well, I’m used to that. Either way, it looks like the Sega fanboys are still out in force and all they really want to do is take everyone who beats up their favorite company to task. As for me? I couldn’t care less. The darn thing was a piece of crap that ruined the company. And just to make them happy, it’s true — I did (and still do) love my Dreamcast. Honestly, I wish Kalinske never made that stupid blunder of releasing the console on the day of the announcement and I wish Sega would make another console.
Chances of that happening? Slim and none.

‘piece of crap that ruined the company.’
Yes, it did ruined the company somehow (by bad decisions made by Sega during the Saturn days), but to say its a piece of crap is still wrong.. i have a Sega Saturn, and guess only people who actually experienced it can understand the greatness of it. Atari Jaugar and 3DO may fit the bill more appropiately.
Besides, there are 2 critically acclaimed games that fetches a Bomb on ebay, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Radiant Silvergun.
I’m going to have to side with those who believe you’re misinformed, because you obviously haven’t done the research necessary for such a topic. The fact that you blame Kalinske for the Saturn’s release is proof enough of that. The Saturn was the brainchild of Sega of Japan, and Kalinske was against its early release from day one. He was a major proponent of maintaining the Genesis viable into 1996 instead of discontinuing it in 1995 ( which is what gave the SNES control of the 16-bit market and kept it going well into the 32-bit era, something you conveniently left out in your article praising the SNES). I’ve interviewed Kalinske and addressed this issue, and going by the glaring amount of inaccuracies, glazed-over facts, and dressed-up opinion in your article, I think you’re being more than a bit presumptuous in passing this it off as fact. It’s a disservice to your readers and to those who actually enjoyed the consoles you’re discussing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but yours would be taken much more seriously if there was at least a marginal attempt at justification behind it.
I appreciate your opinion, too, but to give rate the Saturn lower than the 3DO and Jaguar makes you look really uneducated. I remember at the time when everyone knew the Saturn had the best games no one played. Countless reviews heaped praise on the winter 96 (I think) releases of VF2 and Sega Rally.
Not to mention having historical status of being the first console officially online.
I agree completely that Sega of America screwed the pooch managing the Saturn, but there are a lot of great games, way more than 30, and the Saturn has it’s place in history.
hey , don you’re a dip shit. when you know nothing about game history, you’d better shut your anus”th. and please when you know nothing just don’t write. many people have negative comments agaisnt you because you’re wrong. you vs. other people, you lost. your article don’t stand a chance.
Uh, you lost all your credibility when you claimed the Dreamcast shared a similar “disaster role” in SEGA’s fall.
The fact that you’re used to things “not going well” means something, Don. Means you should wonder if you are fit for your role as a technology blogger.
Thx for your time
