  1. Just FYI, your IT World “Making It Personal” link shows a 404 on IT World’s site.

  2. Hello Don,

When you recently spoke about Hulu on your podcast 8-13, I agreed with your statement that Hulu is good, but could be better with better content. What I don’t understand is why you don’t think that idea can apply to advertising? You say the ads are, ‘doable’, ‘not a big deal’, and that you are ‘willing’ to sit through them in order to watch content. Well, lo and behold, I work for an online advertising company that offers a premium advertising experience; a ‘better’ experience. Watch only one ad to receive content and then no more interruptions. It makes sense and it is my preference, I just can’t believe the majority of viewers aren’t asking for it.

  3. Don, your column about Dell charging was a little off. I was a victim of this “Premium service”. You misquoted the price. It’s ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY NINE DOLLARS! Im still a little edgy over that as you can see.

Got my new Dell last thursday. It had a completely different video card than what I was promised. When I called customer service I was transferred to a guy who told me that I could get US based service normally a higher charge for only $5. This wasnt told to me as a monthly fee or anything other than “Pay five dollars and you get it for a year”. He also said that “it will cover any other PC in the house”. Not just dell,…ANY PC. I took, it.

THen it hit the fan. I got connected to my “My Tech Team” rep who politely told me “No, its $149 and it will only cover Dell PC’s under warranty”. I was lied to. I specifically asked the rep “Now this is ONLY $5?”.

I sent several emails to Dell before they would agree to take it off. This is my first (and probably last) dell.

  13. Don:

I ususally enjoy your slideshows. The one today regarding subject article is just plain wrong…you need to rethink several items.

    1. No social network integration. Fine…but neither does any other OS…that’s because they’re handled by apps…my question to you is, “And your point is?”

    2. Better cloud integration…again, you are running excel…you could run the web excel..this is also an app issue…nothing to do with the OS.

    3. Features missing from starter edition. OK…so you’re running on a slower processor or machine with limited capabilities. And you want 64 bit support…these things are mutually exclusive. Windows Aero has a performance cost…limited machine remember????

    4. Expert mode. Granted there’s no “Expert mode click here” button. That would be the easy way. UAC is much better for experts, and you can change folder properties in about 5 seconds…why do you want a “expert” button?

    5. Self-analysis…that’s where you’re just plain wrong. Right click nearly anywhere and left click. There’s plenty of manage, troubleshoot, configure, and customize options. And Security Center tells you to install malware apps. It’s not the O/S fault that a malware app does not do it’s job.

    6. MAC OS influence. What makes MAC easy is the toolbar. Put any app there you want. Same with 7. How is that missing?

    7. Vista taskbar. You claim that the” 7 taskbar is extremely useful”. So, again, how is that missing?

    8. Media player, IE, Search all enabled in 7. You state, “It’s a nice option.” So again, how is that missing?

    9. Classic start menu is missing. You state “Windows 7’s start menu is much more user friendly” Broken record here, how is that missing?

    10. Mail, photo gallery and movie maker. Again, these are apps. 7 pulled them off the o/s install and you can still get them for free. I’ll agree, they’re missing from Vista, but it’s not a “deal breaker”.

Maybe print a retraction? Maybe start over? I dunno…but this article make you look like you’re smoking something.

  14. This is an oldy but I read your artical: “Why is Microsoft even offering Windows 7 Ultimate?” and I am still wondering whether the case is true that Ultimate only adds encryption and languages?

I had a horrible experience with Vista buying Premium to find that it did not support Software RAID (something I needed for my mobo that I chose SAS RAID and non-RAID for SATA).

Then when I bought upgrade to ultimate (which did support software RAID the upgrade wasn’t supported (spent 6 weeks with Microsoft support).

So my question: Is the new Windows 7 Premium (Professional) really only different in 2 ways? Or would I be burned once again?
